1. January was cold. And gray. We’d get in the car in the morning and drive to the other side of the river to gather in the parking lot of some school. Our group was usually twenty or thirty folks, all ages, all races. We’d find our spot in the parade roster. We’d be wearing shirts…
“Old Stone” off of Laura Marling’s debut album Alas, I Cannot Swim. Definitely a top choice for best album of 2008.
“Buoy” off of The Nightgowns’ 2009 album Sing Something. Based out of Tacoma, this band has been rocking out the south sound for many years. I bought their first album back when they were still called The Elephants and enjoyed their drum machine, 80s pop based sound and once watched them perform on a bluff down in Ruston, by point defiance. Only last night did I first start listening to this fantastic new album and particularly this song “Buoy” will definitely make it onto many of my playlists to come.
Hope you enjoy!
“The Story I Heard” by Blind Pilot off of their debut album 3 Rounds and a Sound. Great album, songs, lyrics that you can just let play and relax you as you’re walking to class, driving in your car, or just laying down staring at the ceiling.
Short post, but have a listen. Enjoy!
“Penance Fire Blues” off of Bobby Long’s album (only sold at shows) Dirty Pond Songs. Great song, possibly my favorite (working on a cover of it) off of this album. Bobby Long is an artist from the London Folk scene whos major worldwide popularity (sadly) comes from his connection with the Twilight franchise. Good friends with Robert Pattinson, he and Marcus Foster (another great artist) wrote a song for Pattinson to play for the movie soundtrack. Off of that connection, Bobby Long and cohorts are great listens and I recommend them to all. Many can be found on itunes, others you just might have to wait for them to pop up.
Enjoy!
“Your Misfortune” by Mike Doughty off of his worldwide debut solo album Haughty Melodic. Doughty, after years of spitting out great music with Soul Coughing started touring solo and selling his first two albums Skittish & Rockity Roll at his shows. Dave Matthews, good friend of Doughty’s, offered him a deal on his record label. The Result? Haughty Melodic. If anything, you’ve likely heard his single “Looking at the World from the Bottom of a Well” on the radio from this album or possibly “27 Jennifers” off of his sophomore album with Matthews.
Enjoy!
“Skin Is, My” off of Andrew Bird’s The Mysterious Production of Eggs. Great album, great artist. One of Bird’s best albums in my opinion and possibly my choice for 2004’s album of the year.
“False Horizon” off of Mountain Con’s 2004 release Dusty Zero Dirty Ones. From Seattle, Mountain Con hasn’t necessarily been in the spotlight, but has been going strong since 1999. I first heard about them when I went to a Harvey Danger concert my freshman year of high school and they were one of a few opening acts. I remember enjoying their music tremendously, but it wasn’t until the summer of 2009 when I first started listening to them after going to Bumbershoot Music Festival, where the band was giving out their first three albums to promote their newest release. I took home their first three albums and, sadly, have only listened to one of them through (Dusty) and have yet to get on the buying of their (now two) latest albums. 107.7 The End has played their track “I Woke Up And The Morning Was Grey” from time to time off of this album, which also is a great track that I often get stuck in my head. Other greats include “Hypersaturated Blues” and “Time Is Out Of Joint”.
Dusty Zero Dirty Ones is one of my favorite albums since I picked it up and a strong potential choice for album of 2004.
